Trottier Symposium on Sustainable Engineering, Energy and Design

Confronting Climate Change with Design for Resilience

September 13th, 2022 l 6:30pm (EDT)

* Free online event hosted in English*

The IPCC’s Sixth Assessment Report, Climate Change 2022: Mitigation of Climate Change, published in April 2022, warned of a “now or never” moment to limit the mean global temperature rise that threatens the breakdown of our planet’s climate systems with catastrophic consequences for our society.  As nations around the world attempt to realize their pledge to the Paris Agreement to reduce future carbon emissions, the “committed climate warming” will continue to drive severe weather events for decades to come. The impacts of these events are already being felt around the world and these events disproportionately affect the most vulnerable populations across the globe, deepening poverty and inequality.

Despite these challenges, we have the capacity to implement sustainable solutions in population hotspots most vulnerable to climate driven disasters. Through collaborative efforts, holistic approaches rooted in the concepts of nature-based design, engineers, urban planners, architects and policy makers are meeting the moment, implementing resilient living solutions, reinventing water management practices and adapting our built environments to minimize damage caused by climate-induced natural disasters.

The 9th Trottier Symposium on Sustainable Engineering, Energy and Design will explore success stories of sustainable engineering and design while considering the following questions:

  •  How can urban planners, architects and engineers incorporate nature-based solutions to build resiliency and sustainability in our communities?
  • What climate resilient living solutions have been implemented “on the front lines” of climate
change and how can these strategies be scaled up more broadly?

Meet our Speakers

Henk Ovink

Henk Ovink is the first Special Envoy for International Water Affairs for the Kingdom of the Netherlands. He is Sherpa to the UN & World Bank High Level Panel on Water, and Sherpa for the UN 2023 Conference on Water. Henk served on President Obama’s Hurricane Sandy Rebuilding Task Force and developed and led ‘Rebuild by Design’, the Task Force’s resilience innovation challenge. Henk is the former Director General for Spatial Planning and Water Affairs and Director National Spatial Planning for the Netherlands. Henk teaches at Harvard GSD, the London School of Economics and holds a research position at the University of Groningen. Water as Leverage is Henk’s brainchild, born out of his ceaseless drive and firm believe that the world can be changed through water and by design, leaving no one behind.

Marina Tabassum

A Bangladeshi architect and educator, Marina Tabassum founded Dhaka-based Marina Tabassum Architects in 2005. In her work, Tabassum seeks to establish a language of architecture that is contemporary yet reflectively rooted to place, always against an ecological rubric containing climate, context, culture, history. Her Bait Ur Rouf Mosque is distinguished by its lack of popular mosque iconography, its emphasis on space and light, and its capacity to function not only as a place of worship but also as a refuge for a dense neighborhood on Dhaka’s periphery. The portfolio of work notwithstanding, Tabassum’s practice remains consciously contained in size, undertaking a limited number of projects per year.

Tabassum chairs Foundation for Architecture and Community Equity (FACE) and Prokritee (Fair trade organization). She is a member of the Steering Committee of the Aga Khan Awards for Architecture.
